New Plan Preserves Theater!

March 6th, 2010 No comments

We don’t have all the details yet, but after extensive discussions with Columbia Development and City government late last year, there is a potential compromise solution on the table that at least saves both the facade and theater volume of Troy Proctors!

As reported in the Troy Record this morning, Columbia Development has put forth a draft proposal that would put the new City Hall in the Troy Proctor’s office building and additions, leaving the theater volume untouched and presumable conserved for future restoration. Although full plans were not released, the provided documents show the proposed streetscape and floor plans for the proposal. The implications of theses plans are that a) the theater facade and lobby will be fully restored, b) the theater volume will be left untouched, and c) the two buildings currently standing between the Chasan building and Proctor’s theater will be demolished and replaced with the main entrance and public areas of City Hall.

Naturally, there are many concerns that remain to be addressed, such as whether any of the $4.5M RestoreNY grant funds will be available for restoration of the theater space, whether the plan destroys significant historical value in the two buildings to be demolished, and who will control the theater proper after the construction is complete. However, this is a huge step in the right direction, and very encouraging to our cause!
